I’ve never been one to keep a diary or a journal of any sort, but a really awesome thing happened today – my son was born today. Caden Michael Vicente Mendiola was born at 2:53 am. My wife woke me up at 1:45 am. Our babysitter Anne arrived at our house shortly thereafter to watch Jace. Heidi’s contractions were already 2 minutes apart and were getting stronger each time. We arrived at the hospital at 2:40 am. They brought us to the triage room for Heidi to get prepped but then quickly relocated her to the birthing room. Things were happening so fast and I was doing my best to keep up with the nurses because I had my arms and hands full of our bags and belongings. I followed them to the room and literally threw all our stuff in the corner then took my place at Heidi’s side. I was prepared for at least a 2 hour labor and delivery, but to my surprise and pleasure this was not to be. The doctor arrived and told us that we were having the baby now! She told Heidi to push. I looked down and immediately saw hair! It was at this moment that it hit me that this was the real deal. Another push and the head emerged. A third push and coaxing from the doctor and baby boy popped right out (along with some gooey liquids)! I was beside myself both from amazement and joy. Heidi did great – she gave birth with no drugs despite pleaded for them during the car ride to the hospital. I had a feeling that had I not run the red light turning into the hospital we may have delivered the baby in the parking lot! Heidi later applauded to me that I did the only thing that I helped her out with and that I did well was fanning her. Hey, I’ll take it.
The day progressed with numerous doctors and nurses popping in and out of our room doing all the necessary hospital stuff. When Cade was brought to the nursery I got to watch his first bath, however I forgot to bring the camera. Heidi was a little bummed by that. I should have thought to bring the camera – there will be a lot of “firsts” with Cade. Heidi’s parents, my parents, Jon and Heather, Jeff, Anne and Pete arrived at various times of the day to say hi and congratulate us. However, nearly all of my attention was on Cade. I found myself just staring at his little face especially every time I held him. Each time I looked at him, I said silently to myself, “I’m your daddy. You’re my little boy.”

Today was very special for me because I became a proud father.
